Losing a child is one of life’s most painful experiences. Sarah & Kaliym were heartbroken when their daughter Elizabeth Rose was stillborn, and were shocked to learn couples who lose a child are at greater risk of losing their relationship. In her memory, The Elizabeth Rose Foundation subsidises evidence-based couples therapy for couples experiencing relationship difficulties after the sudden and unexpected loss of a child during pregnancy, birth, infancy or childhood.
Couples Who Lose A Child Are At Greater Risk Of Losing Their Relationship
Grief after the loss of a child impacts a couple's relationship, and grieving parents are at a greater risk of losing their relationship. It seems unthinkable that a person should not only
experience the out of order death of a child, something considered by many as arguably the hardest thing to experience; but that they should then also lose their relationship.
the risk
In Australia, there is no government funded couples therapy for grieving parents. The Medicare Better Access Initiative rebates grief and loss individual therapy but not couples therapy.
Not-for-profit organisations typically provide individual bereavement support services through peer support groups and counselling, and even fewer provide couples the chance to process their grief together.
the need
The Elizabeth Rose Foundation is the first Queensland based charity to provide couples the chance to process their grief together and address their relationship difficulties after the sudden and unexpected loss of a child through subsidised, evidence-based couples therapy.
